Key Ingredients for Strawberry Pop Tart

Creating the perfect strawberry pop tart involves a few essential ingredients that bring this delectable treat to life. As you embark on this baking adventure, each component plays a unique role in crafting that delightful combination of flavors and textures.

  • Strawberries: Fresh strawberries are my go-to. They are vibrant and juicy, bursting with flavor. If strawberries aren’t in season, feel free to use frozen ones, but be sure to drain them well to avoid excess moisture in the filling.

  • Butter: Classic baking often revolves around butter, and it’s no different in my strawberry pop tart recipe. I use cold, unsalted butter in the crust to achieve that tender, flaky texture that perfectly cradles the sweet strawberry filling.

  • Sugar: A blend of granulated sugar for sweetness in the filling, and a touch of powdered sugar for the glaze creates a lovely contrast. This balance ensures the strawberry pop tart isn’t overly sweet, allowing the fruit flavor to shine.

  • Flour: All-purpose flour is essential for the crust. It provides the structure necessary for a sturdy yet flaky pastry. You can experiment with gluten-free blends for a suitable alternative.

  • Egg: An egg adds richness to the dough and helps bind the crust together, ensuring your strawberry pop tart holds its shape beautifully during baking.

Each ingredient plays a crucial role, helping you create a delicious homemade treat that’s sure to impress. Happy baking!

Tips for Making Perfect Strawberry Pop Tarts

Crafting the ultimate strawberry pop tart is an adventure filled with delightful moments. Each step brings you closer to that golden, flaky crust filled with luscious strawberry goodness. Here are some tips to ensure your homemade pop tarts turn out perfectly every time!

Choose the Right Strawberries

Opt for fresh strawberries when making your filling. They’re juicier and boast a vibrant flavor that frozen or canned strawberries just can’t match. If you’re using frozen, make sure to thaw and drain them first to avoid a watery filling.

Make the Dough Flaky

A key to a perfect strawberry pop tart is a flaky crust. Keep your butter very cold, and handle the dough as little as possible. This helps create those beautiful flaky layers that everyone loves. When rolling out your dough, use a light touch—don’t overwork it!

Perfectly Seal Your Tarts

To avoid any leakage during baking, properly seal the edges of your pop tarts. You can do this by crimping with a fork or using your fingers. Brushing the edges with an egg wash before sealing can also help create a better bond.

Bake to Golden Perfection

Watch your pop tarts closely as they bake. You want them to be golden brown but not overcooked. If you notice they’re browning too quickly, you can tent them with foil to protect them.

Taking these tips into account will elevate your homemade strawberry pop tarts to new heights. Enjoy the process and the delicious results!

Description

Delicious homemade strawberry pop tarts made with flaky pie crust and sweet strawberry jam.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 sheets pie crust
  • 1 cup strawberry jelly (or jam)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 68 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • sprinkles (optional but encouraged for more fun!)

Instructions

  1. Prep oven and baking sheet. Preheat oven to 350ºF and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine two pie crusts. On a lightly floured, clean surface take two of the pie crusts and layer them on top of each other. Roll them together to make one longer dough sheet with an even thickness. Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut away excess dough and form a rectangle that will fit inside of your baking sheet leaving a little room around the edges.
  3. Add bottom layer of pie crust to baking pan. Using a rolling pin dusted with flour, roll the dough up so that it can be easily transferred onto your baking pan. Roll the dough onto the pan and make sure that it is flat.
  4. Spread with jam. Using a spatula or spoon, spread the strawberry jam over the dough leaving about an inch of a border all the way around the dough rectangle.
  5. Combine two more pie crusts. On the same lightly floured surface, take the two remaining pie crusts and roll them together to again make them one longer sheet of dough, cutting the dough to form a rectangle that is the same size as your first dough sheet.
  6. Transfer the dough to layer on top of your tart. Using the flour dusted rolling pin, roll the dough around it so that it can be transferred to the baking sheet. Roll the dough off of the rolling pin and onto the top of the strawberry preserves.
  7. Seal edges and vent dough. Flour a fork by dipping it into flour and then go around the outside edge of the dough pressing down to crimp the bottom and top layer together. Continue to dip the fork into flour as you go so that the fork doesn’t stick to your dough. Using the same fork, gently poke holes around the top layer to allow any steam to escape while baking.
  8. Bake. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is lightly browned.
  9. Cool. Let cool completely on your baking sheet.
  10. Add frosting. Whisk together powdered sugar, 6 tablespoons heavy whipping cream, and vanilla extract in a medium size bowl. Add more heavy whipping cream to thin the frosting if needed. Spread the frosting around the top of the pop tart leaving a border around the edges.
  11. Add sprinkles. Sprinkle the pop tart with fun or festive sprinkles of your choice, if you’d like!
